fire trucks to carry
oxygen masks for pets
The City of Port Coquitlam fire trucks will soon be equipped
with four pet oxygen masks in order to help improve emergency response services
to pets in the community.
The kits cost $130 each and have been donated to the city by
Mountain View Veterinary Hospital.
The masks will be presented to the city
on Thursday, July 9 at 9:00am at Fire Hall #1, 1725 Broadway Street.
The hospital will provide training to firefighters on the use of the masks and
pet resuscitation techniques. Media and public are welcome to attend.
The pet oxygen masks come in three
different sizes (s,m,l) and can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea
pigs and birds. They are high quality, reusable and fit seamlessly with the
fire department’s existing oxygen supply systems. The masks are shaped to fit
over the pets’ nose to create a
better seal so pets can get a more efficient oxygen delivery.
Port Coquitlam has an estimated pet population of over
15,700 and many of those pets remain at home alone while their owners are out.
In the event of a fire or a natural disaster, pets are often at an increased
risk because unlike humans who flee from danger, pets instinctively seek a
hiding place within the home.
The masks were first donated to the Township of Langley, as
part of a successful “Trim Those Paws for a Great Cause!” fundraiser in which
the hospital staff offered pet nail trims by donation to raise funds for the
masks.
